An Elegant Piano Room

After a large remodel, our client was left with an empty room aside from a black grand piano. Our challenge was to make this room welcoming but spare, to encourage playing and finding serenity.  We started with this contemporary rug to establish a palette and provide movement, texture and sound absorption. We chose chairs that echo the shape of the piano and upholstered them in a classic, b&w houndstooth. We added a chandelier, gilded floor lamps, a velvet ottoman, and an old photograph of our client’s grandmother as a professional piano player in the 1950s. The bold fix, however, was to make a giant, 9ft mirror and lean it against the wall to provide scale and reflect both the view and the sound of the piano. This elegant space is a beautiful feature room to bathe in light and sound—or to quiet the mind after a long week.
